Does the "UP Squared" have a post code display ?
Does it have a secondary BIOS chip which can be programmed ? How ?

    No, it does not.

    However, under a disaster or aborted flash, there is an advanced procedure to recover the UP bios (and across all UP boards) by flashing the bios with an external SOIC-8 clip and SPI programmer.

    I got the clip myself if I ever run into the problem. However, SPI programmers are not cheap.

    I did find some online tutorials explaining how to use a RPi's SPI pins with the same clip. Completely untested, but something like this looks promising.
