Looking here I did these commands:
root@ubuntu-up2:~# uname -r
4.4.0-78-generic
root@ubuntu-up2:~#

add-apt-repository ppa:ubilinux/up
apt update
apt install linux-upboard

root@ubuntu-up2:~# uname -r
4.4.0-2-upboard
root@ubuntu-up2:~#

I picked the

*Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-2-upboard (upstart)

In the Grub boot Advanced options. Looked like this on the serial port.
                    GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.9

Use the and keys to select which entry is highlighted.
Press enter to boot the selected OS, `e' to edit the commands
before booting or `c' for a command-line. ESC to return previous
      menu.

So it like down graded. But I guess it's a better kernel for this Up2 board.
