SUSE Linux - Leap 42.2 / SLE 12 SP2

Hi,
Does anyone have experience with SUSE Linux on the UP Board (v1)?

We have performed simple test with openSUSE Leap 42.2. Standard installation and check of core functionality, browser video playback etc. At first impression all looks like it is functioning OK. However we are unsure if our system is 100% stable just running with a default kernel etc.

For Ubuntu a custom kernel is recommended.
Will this be necessary in order to have a fully working and stable system?
Anyone who can guide us in the right direction in order to compile a similar custom kernel for SUSE Linux?

Any help and comments on this is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Kind Regards,
Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

At the moment we enabled 4.4 kernels for ubilinux (based on debian 8), Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 and Yocto.

You can see the Yocto kernel patches available from: https://github.com/emutex/meta-up-board/tree/krogoth/recipes-kernel/linux/files

Those might help you to integrate those changes in SUSE Linux.

At the moment we are working on the new ubilinux 4.0 release, which will be available later in June.
The new release is going to be based on Debian 9.0 and together we will release kernel patches for the 4.9 kernel, which will be followed by Ubuntu kernels and Yocto.

Thank you for your feedback. We have succesfully installed our openSUSE Leap 42.2 image on UP v1. Running default 4.4 kernel.

As far as we can see, we have the following issues we need to solve.

    - suspend to mem (most important)
    - HDMI audio
    - watch dog timer

The Kernel patches you link to might include fixes for these issues however we are not sure exactly what has to be done (we are not kernel experts).

If someone know how to check and fix this any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi Kevin,

4.4 Mainline or standard distributions kernels (from Ubuntu, to OpenSuse) do not include support for suspend to mem and HDMI audio on Atom X5-Z8350 and other Cherry Trail SoC.

About the watchdog timer I can tell you that it works fine on our distribution, ubilinux or Ubuntu with UP Board custom kernel.

In order to get support for the first 2 items you would need to use our Kernels or to apply the available patches to your Kernel.
We offer professional support for Linux customization, including the Kernel You can contact u: https://emutex.com/about-us/contact-us

Otherwise, in order to get support for the above features, you might need to install a 4.11 mainline kernel (latest stable). On Ubuntu there are packages available from the Linux Kernel Mainline PPA.
