Up Extreme and 4G networking

Hello,
what should I do in order to see / configure / use a 4G sim card?
I tried plugging a SIM with a working data plan, but I see no network device.
What should I install or configure?
I'm running the 5.0.0 modified kernel as per instructions: 5.0.0-1-generic #2~upboard4-Ubuntu.
ifconfig listes only: eno1, enp2s0, lo, wlp1s0
lusb shows:
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 009: ID 8087:0025 Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Any hint?
Thank you in advance,
Joez.

Is wlp1s0 a wlan interface? Does it recognize the wwan card in the mpci slot?

I saw a few settings in the UEFI, one to enable to wwan on PCIe slot I think looked like it was defaulted to off if I recall correctly. Might take a look around in there.

    Hi @beaker,
thanks for the nudge, indeed it defaults off, but I did turn it on without luck.
    lspci returns me

and I don't see the card. Should I install something more?
wlp1s0 is indeed the wlan card which works properly, I enabled even the feature to let wlan and wwlan coexist in the BIOS but nothing changes.
    What can I try more?
    Thanks in advance,
    joez

I think the coexistance setting is for specific types of WLAN and WWAN combinations that may have problems, from reading in the UEFI it looked like some intel-intel combinations have problems. I'm not certain though.

Your lspci output looks similar to mine, I too am having issues with the PCIe on the device, though I have not yet tried a mPCI WWAN card.

I have a Net Plus Board attached, that from looking at the block diagram should be attached to PCIe lanes 5 through 9 through the 100-pin connector. It is not recognized by the Up Xtreme though, and the USB 3.0 port on the Net Plus Board does not even have power on it when the board is booted.

I'm not sure, but looks like maybe still some bugs in it to be worked out, I sent them some e-mails requesting support as it is currently not working properly or I am missing something entirely to get it to work.

    Hi @joez

What is the exact 4G modem your are using?

Have you tried to unplug and replug the modem (please make sure the board is powered off and disconnected from the power source)?

    Hi @DCleri, thanks for answering!
I just tried plugging a SIM card into the SIM slot present on the Up Extreme board,
Isn't it a modem, if not, what is it for?

    Thanks,
    joez

    Hi @joez

You need a dedicated MiniPCIe modem, there is only SIM card slot on the board

    Thanks @DCleri ,

would a MC7700 based mini pcie adapter work fine?

    Thanks!

    Hi @joez

We haven't tested that modem, the only ones we tested are available in our shop: up-shop.org

In general any USB modem using the MiniPCIe interface will work if it is supported by the kernel version that is in use with UP Xtreme.

At the moment the kernel for UP Xtreme is 5.0
