Using VLC to play mp3 or mp4 will prevent video output (screen gets no signal)

After installing UBilinux (ubilinux-3.0.iso),
I'm trying to use the pre-installed VLC play mp3 (audio) files and mp4 (video) files.
First, launch VLC, no problem.
Then, drag one media file into VLC, then the screen immediately becomes blank. Get no signal.
However, the system is still alive. I can use SSH to log in.
Use command 'top' to find out process id of VLC, then use command 'kill' to kill it.
Then the screen will be back to normal.
Why? Please help. Thanks.

UP changes video modes when playing videos to full hd. If your screen can't handle all video modes that what you get...
