UP-GWS01-does not start up when there is external SSD drive connected
type : UP-GWS01-A20-1432-A11
I use this device to install the VMS software for a CCTV application.
More then 20 units are already installed in the field.
The camera images are stored on an external SSD drive. (Sandisk extreme portable SSD 500GB).
The OS (Windows 10 enterprice Iot )is not on the SSD drive.
With some devices , when the SSD drive is plugged in, the system does not start up.
Is it possible that the legacy USB support is the problem?
How can I fix the problem ?
wich BIOS is supported ? Can I change the legacy USB options ?
thank you for the support

@Rebotec
Legacy USB is not supported on UP-GWS01-A20-1432-A11, only UEFI. I think your problem has nothing to do with legacy USB support, this would not affect the system boot up. Have you tried other SSD drive, or use GPT for SSD?
BTW, what is the current bios version you use? -
@Rebotec
Just to correct information belowLegacy USB is not supported on UP-GWS01-A20-1432-A11, only XHCI.
-
current Bios version : 2.18.1263 . is there a new version that fix the problem ?
With Samsung SSD there seems to be no problem. But I bought already 40 Sandisk SSD drives so I want to fix the problem. -
That is not the BIOS version, you can find that in the main menu of the BIOS screen and it starts with R, e.g. R1.8
-
BIOS version : UP-CHT01 R2.1 (UPC1DM21) (11/12/2019)
I tried GPT but still, when the SSD drive is connected the system can not start up. If I remove de SSD drive, there is no problem. -
can you check the boot tab under the BIOS menu and make sure the first boot selected is eMMC?
-
under boot tab there is :
boot configuration
Quiet boot [disabled]
OS image ID [Windows]
Boot option Priorities
Boot option #1 [Windows Boot Manager]That's all
I don't see eMMC ...
-
do you have any other thing connected?
You don't see eMMC because it is the bootable partition that you see, which includes the Windows boot manager.
Now connect the Sandisk and go again into the BIOS menu under Boot tab. Is it the same?
-
@Rebotec
It's probably a compatibility issue, or the power required for run.
I saw the SSD interface is USB 3.1 Gen 2 - Sandisk extreme portable SSD 500GB
Have you tried connecting your SSD to USB3.0 OTG port with USB3.0 Adapter? -
If I connect the Sandisk it is not possible to go into the BIOS
-
Are you connecting the Sandisk and other SSD to the USB2.0 port or to the micro USB3.0 port via adapter?
-
USB2.0 port.
Now I have connected the SSD drive to another USB 2.0 port (left instead of right) and now I can start up the system.
So I think the right USB port is broken. Can I check that ? -
You can try using another disk or peripheral to that USB port that seems broken.
Also connecting a USB3.0 disk to a USB2.0 port is not good as the power provided by a USB2.0 port is only 0.5A, while a USB3.0 port provides 0.9A.
The UP Board has a microUSB3.0 port that is more suitable to connect high speed devices and external disks.
As suggested by my colleague above you should get the adapter from our shop and connect the Sandisk SSD to the microUSB3.0 port: https://up-shop.org/usb3-0-adapter-micro-b-male-to-a-female.html -
I have connected the SSD drive with a new cable directly to the micro USB3.0 port but there is no change., same problem
-
I still don't have any solution to the problem....
Can you give me some support ?
thanks -
Can you try to clean completely the disk you are connecting with a software like gparted and:
- remove all the partitions
- recreate the partition table (GPT)
- create a new partition (FAT32, NTFS or EXT4)
Apply and try again
