[SOLVED] Temporary Swap

I was trying to compile something last night, I got an error saying I was out of virtual memory. Knowing that it's not a great idea for flash storage to use swap, I understand that one wouldn't want that by default. However when I tried running building a temporary swap partition, I couldn't run mkswap or swapon/off. Is this something ubilinux removed, or am I crazy?

I'm going to switch to Lubuntu for now because the program I was trying to compile last night has a PPA, so I may be able to get around this for now, but I'd like to know for future reference how to activate a temporary swap (especially since 1GB of RAM is a bit small these days).
