Booting straight into EFI shell

I have an UP Board straight out of the box. When I power it, I never get to see the UP logo. It boots straight to EFI Shell. I can exit the shell, but then get prompted for a password, which I've not set. I can plug in a Ubuntu start up USB. But when I go through the installation process, it tries to install Ubuntu on the USB stick, not on the UP Board.
Is this a faulty board, or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
Mat

When I start if with the installation usb plugged in it also warns me that: "This machine's firmware has started the installer in UEFI mode but it looks like there may be existing operating systems already installed using BIOS compatibility mode. Which again seem to me that it's installing onto the start up usb, rather than the board.

This somehow started working, I'm not sure what changed.
