SPI - anyone had it working - ubilinux

Hey guys, I'm really struggling here, I've ported the wiringPi library crudely, and installed spi-tools onto my Up2 board, but having plugged a Matrix Voice board in (for testing) I simply cannot get any response from the SPI interface, it's always reading 0 on either 1.0 or 1.1. I'm a bit of a newbie here, but I've followed what scant documentation I can find, they seem to be enabled but I can draw no data from the interface.
Has anyone gotten the Up2 SPI interface working at all?
