connecting to a Mac over serial/USB

I tried to connect my UP2 board to my Mac using USB cable. I tried with a USB Type A cable to all 3 ports, as well as Micro-B. But I never saw any device show up under:
ls /dev/cu.*
ls /dev/tty.*
I am able to ssh to the UP2 board over ethernet. But I'd like to be able to connect over serial/USB as well, e.g. when its IP address changes and I need to find out the new IP.
Any tips on connecting to Mac over serial/USB?
