connecting to a Mac over USB

I was trying to connect my UP2 board to my Mac with a serial connection over USB. I tried connecting with a USB Type A to all 3 ports, as well as a USB Micro-B. But I didn't see anything show up under:
ls /dev/cu.*
ls /dev/tty.*
I can use the board by itself just fine, and I can ssh to it when connected to ethernet. But I'd like to be able to login over serial/USB, e.g. if its IP address changes and I want to know the new IP.
Anyone tips for connecting to Mac over serial/USB?

I'm connecting to the UPsquared from a Mac fine.
I'm using a cheap USB2TTL converter and an BusPirate.
But you have to get a USB 2.0 cable and connect it to CN10.
