HDMI Audio crashing X Server

Hi,
I've got the latest release of ubilinux, freshly installed on an Up.
If I play any audio of any kind the X Server crashes. A message appears in the system log:
hdmi-audio hdmi-audio: invalid position: , pos = 22048, buffer size = 22048, period size = 5512
This happens when, for example, I play a video with sound in chrome, but also if I open the pulseaudio control panel or do pretty much anything to do with sound.
If I rmmod the hdmi_audio module then nothing crashes, so it looks very likely to be the culprit.
Any hints on what I can try?
