usb suspend/sleep

I'm creating a kind of backupserver and was wondering what I have to do on the upboard+ubilinux to put usb drives in suspend/sleep mode after a while!

I tried a lot but nothing was spinning down my connected harddisk.

Search for hdparm there is a standby mode and sleep mode.
