My Upxtreme i7 runs Ubuntu 20.04. Occasionally when powering up, instead of normalling booting into Ubuntu, it boots into the UEFI Shell. If I reset from the shell, the normal ubuntu boot occurs.

Why would this problem only happen sometimes when booting?

I see several other posts with a very similar issue, but no solutions. There was a suggestion that it was a low CMOS battery, but that did not seem to help others, or my situtation.

Hello,

Hello, I am currently facing a problem while rebooting UpXtreme. When I start UpXtreme, there is no problem even though the Zyxel Router is plugged in, but when I want to reboot, it does not pass the loading screen because the Zyxel Router is plugged in. When I unplug the Zyxel cable, the process continues. So when I want to restart UpXtreme, I have to unplug and plug in the Zyxel.

I examined the BIOS settings, but the problem was not resolved.

Has anyone encountered this problem before and have any suggestions for a solution?

Hi,

We have an issue with an UP Xtreme board
Board link : https://www.aaeon.com/en/p/up-xtreme-compact-embedded-board-whiskey-lake

This is the first time our team dealing with this Board
Yesterday, the board was running normally, powered by a standard AC/DC adopter with the output of 48V,2A , in our lab.

An engineer Flashed The Whisky lake Built BIOS (Built from Tianocore code) through "flashrom" on Ubuntu Machine. Suddenly the Machine gets Hung, and the Engineer tried to restart the board from the board itself but it didn't work. so finally engineer did power cycle(turned off the power supply).

when the engineer turned on power supply the board is in idle condition, and the fan not spinning. so engineer disconnected the CMOS and connected back even though board not booting up.

we approached one of my Hard Debug Engineer, so to perform/check the board condition he needed schematic diagrams with all the components values presented in the sheet. so can i get those documents ?

I use several Up Xtreme for industrial projects but on one system, if I do not use it for several days, on the first boot, the Up does not boot properly and stop in the UEFI shell. If I unplug the power and try again, it works and I can power cycle it again in the same day.
But as soon I let it off for a few days, the problem happen again.
But in my industrial process, I need to make it boot automatically with a relay and there is no screen connected in case of a failure.

Do you have an idea how to fix this behavior?

We're trying to use an UP Xtreme (the Celeron version) to run the Microsoft HLK test on a 16.0" 120Hz display.
For some reason there is terrible jitter on the screen. See the video in the linked zip file to see what I mean.
The jitter happens in the BIOS screen, as well, so I don't think it is a driver problem.
This exact screen works without jitter when connected to a Dell PC with a 7th gen Intel processor. (The integrated graphics controllers in 7th gen and 8th gen Intel processors are almost identical.)
The display also worked without jitter when I connected it to a Lenovo laptop with 11th gen Intel processor and integrated graphics.

A version of this display that runs at 60Hz worked fine on the UP Xtreme. But at 120Hz refresh rate it jitters.

I reset the BIOS settings to default, but that did not fix the jitter. Like I said, the display jitter is visible in the BIOS screens, so I don't think this is a driver problem.

How do we fix the jitter on the display?

Please help! We need to run the HLK tests as soon as we can, but the jitter is making it impossible.

The linked zip file has reports from CPU-Z and Intel System Support Utility for both the UP Xtreme and the 7th Gen Intel PC.

Hi,

We have an issue with an UP Xtreme board UPX-WHLI7-A20-16064.
We have already used this board a few time without any issue.

Yesterday, the board was running normally, powered by a standard 19V AC adapter, in our lab.
An engineer came close to the fan and the cooler with his hand (without touching it) to feel the temperature. Then the board suddenly shut down as the engineer felt a brief electric discharge. Probably an electrostatic discharge from the metal radiant on the cooler.

Since this moment, it is impossible the turn on the board.
When we push the ON button, the fan doesn’t turn (yet sometimes it briefly turns), the USB ports have no power, and the HDMI display is black (Ubuntu is on the board).
Even if the board seems completely not running, if we let the power supply and press the ON button, we can feel that the cooler is hotter and hotter, so something is still happening.

We tried to disconnect the CMOS battery for a few minutes and reconnect it, then tried to power on, but it failed.

Could you give us some support regarding this issue ? Should the board sent back to UP ?

I contacted the UP Store support and they asked me to post my issue here.

Thanks,
Alexis

I have plugged the board in through ethernet and got a driver for Linux online and attempted to mount it manually but cannot get it to work. is there a board incompatibility with this device or a different way to get this device to work so I can use a wireless network instead of an ethernet cable?

I bought 3 more UP xtreme 2 months ago and all 3 new units have SPI problems.
This issue only occurs on newly purchased products, not on previously purchased products.
The product I purchased is a UP Xtreme i7C1-8565U (V0 stepping) model, and I think it will be similar to the model I have (i7 in 2020).

OS: ubuntu 18.04
kernel: 5.4.65 RT (I made it after seeing this link: https://github.com/raess1/UPxtreme-RT-kernel)

To explain in detail, if you check the signal through the oscilloscope without connecting the control board to 40pin of UP xtreme after setting the board, you can see that it is normally output.
However, when the existing control board (STM32 F474) is connected, the SPI signal (CLOCK, MOSI, MISO, CS all) is not output.
In /dev, spidev0.0 and spidev0.1 are visible, but when the signal is checked with an oscilloscope, no signal is seen.
After that, SPI communication does not work in any case until the OS is reinstalled.
After reinstallation, some boards are capable of SPI communication (2 units, the same problem recurs when a control board is connected), and some boards still do not (1 unit).

The control board was connected to the existing UP xtreme and used without any problem, and the OS and kernel have not been changed.
There is no history of updating CMOS settings and firmware.

Please let me know how I can solve this problem.

Hi,
I've been using an M.2 SSD in my Xtreme for a while, and it works great.
It is a Crucial MX500 500GB 2280, like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-2280SS-Internal/dp/B077SQ8J1V
It is installed in the M-keyed slot (CN4).

I recently bought the M.2 2230 Wifi Kit for the Xtreme from your shop:
https://up-shop.org/new-m-2-2230-wifi-kit-for-up-squared-up-xtreme.html
but when it is installed in the E-key slot (CN3), the Xtreme system no longer detects my SSD in CN4.

How do I fix this? I need to use both devices!

Thanks

However, it will not appear at all when plugged into the USB port on the Net Plus:

So bottom line, I can't get USB3 to work at all on the Net Plus. I have tried several different UP Xtreme host systems, all with the same results. The UP Xtreme block diagram shows that PCIe lanes 5~9 are routed to the Docking connector, where the Net Plus is attached. WHL EDS also shows that only lanes 1~6 can be configured for USB3:

Furthermore, Device Manager shows that PCIe lanes 6/7/8 are used for the 4 GbE ports:

Therefore, the USB3 port on Net Plus would have to connect to PCIe lane 5 on the chipset if this has any chance of working.

So in conclusion, there are 3 possible explanations for this:

The USB3 port on the Net Plus does not connect to PCIe lane 5 on the chipset.

The BIOS on the UP Xtreme does not configure PCIe lane 5 for USB3.

My Net Plus is simply broken.

I would really like to know if anyone has been able to get USB3 to work on the Net Plus connected to UP Xtreme. If so, that would rule out option 1 and leave options 2 or 3. But if no-one has been able to make this work then option 3 seems less likely and options 1 or 2 are the likely root cause.

We have managed to send some RS-422 Full Duplex frames using the TX- and TX+ pins but when receiving frames on RX- and RX+ there is only garbage received.

We have checked the signals with a scope, they are clean an the scope is able to correctly decode them in both directions.

@DCleri could you please confirm the pinout and that the RS-422 is functional in both directions with current BIOS?

Could we have the pinout of the DB9 connector on the chassis to confirm the correct wiring please.

Thanks.

Hello,

we experience problems with an upXtreme board that we bought about 10 months ago.

Over the last couple of weeks did we stumble upon non-reproducible network problems, which arose every few hours to every couple of days.
Network connections dropped completely, sometimes when the upXtreme was under load, sometimes when it was idling.
This got more and more frequent, even to the point, where not only the connection dropped, but the network adapters were not even recognized by the operating system anymore.

First we thought about a software problem, so we reinstalled everything, tried different operating systems etc. None of that helped.

A few days ago did we encounter new problems, not only did the network devices stop working, but the whole upXtreme board started crashing.
However: We found a way to reproduce the crashes. When one of the USB ports at the back of the upXtreme board is being used, slightly touching the device that is plugged in, near the USB port, crashes the upXtreme board.

This is independent of the USB device plugged in. It happens with USB sticks, keyboards etc.

All in all do we suspect a problem of the upXtreme itself at this point, and not a software problem.
Furthermore is the board unusable at this point, the crashing / network dropping happens at least every few hours, so this is nothing we can work with.

How should we proceed about those issues?

Regards,

Hi,

I have some troubles with the USB3.0 header (CN15 on the schematics) and the RJ45 port (CN8), Intel i219. With the pre-installed ubuntu distro that came with the board, the USB3.0 port has extremely poor read/write speeds (e.g. 65 kb/s when trasnferring 2.7MB pdf to the file from internal storage to external SSD, Samsung MU-PA2T0B). Another issues is with the ethernet performance, where I only get 10Mbit interface in ubuntu and thus the download/upload speedsare poor. In the datasheet it is stated that both are Gbps ports. Is there any drivers missing or anything that I can do to fix this?

If I plug the SSD to USB3.0 port CN14, the read/write speeds are excellent. Same thing when using RJ45 port CN7, the connection reads as 1Gbit.

Best regards,
Jacob

When I turn on the board with mouse, keyboard, monitor, and flash drive burned with the Ubuntu OS system, the monitor gets no signal and inputs from the mouse and keyboard do nothing. The fan turns on, power button glows, and the board heats up after a couple minutes. Any suggestions for getting board to respond? Or should I apply for RMS?

Hi All,
I needed a passively cooled computation engine for our radar system that will take an advantage of the Myriad chips for fast matrix computations (got the dev kit with Core i-3 + 2xMyriad chips on it). At this moment I am running a program that process signals (lots of FFTs, and matrix operations) and I am a bit surprised by the Up Xtreme inability to dissipate the heat from the CPUs. After of calculations 8 minutes (indoor, ambient room temperature), the system start throttling the CPUs. On few occasions it hangs up.

Even when the computer "did nothing" for some time, it became pretty warm.
I did not even started any computations on Movidius.
I can always put a fan on it but the whole point of the purchase was NOT to have any moving parts.

Do other users have similar problem?

Regards,

I posted the following in another thread discussing a similar issue, but haven't received any response yet, and wanted to make sure I was neither hijacking someone else's post nor getting lost for an issue being considered resolved for inaction by the first poster. My post:

I've been having similar problems with two Xtremes. I've installed both server and desktop in a couple different configurations each based upon what seemed reasonable. I allowed the installers to set partitions automatically and use the whole disk. The 64GB mmc was selected each time. Following installation and reboot, neither eMMC nor Ubuntu was available to select as a boot source. None of the listed devices that could reasonably have been aliased for the eMMC have resulted in a successful boot.

Hi!there.
Recently I bought a UP Xtreme, but unfortunately, I got some problems with how to use it smoothly. I got the following two problems, it'd be greatly appreciated if they were solved.
the first trouble I encountered is about Ubuntu installing. After installing the Ubuntu system, it can't boot succussfully, and it enters \ the UEFI or grub instead of the system. I installed it many times and only several times I made it(for some reason I uninstalled it then).
the second is about changing the kernel. the after-sale servicer told me that I need to change the kernel of the Ubuntu system so that the maker board can perform best. however, I did exactly as the instructions !
), it failed to boot after the kernel change.
it's my first time to change the kernel of a system and I'm really confused. Hope anyone could help me figure it out.

Sincerely,

Hi,

I've noticed an apparent issue with UP Xtreeme CPU fan not speeding up when CPU temperature increases on Ubuntu 19.10 (stock 5.x kernel) and 18.04 (running 5.x kernel from ppa:aaeonaeu/upboard). In both cases, I was able to push the core temperature to a steady 93-94C range using a CPU stress test (stress-ng) but the CPU fan was still barely spinning. Good for noise control, bad for temperature control. The numbers in /proc/cpuinfo seem to indicate that cores' clocks are being throttled.

The lm-sensors package could not find any CPU fan controls.

Has anyone run into similar issues or knows of possible workarounds?
