Does it need to be a vectorworks document for you to be able to use it? Maybe as a workaround/quick fix they can export to a different file format, like IFC or DXF that you can import back into VW. And if you are forced to have more dealings with this person tell them that you can't work with this workflow and their use of an illegal copy, that it's highly unprofessional and that they can buy it second hand as well:
