I have an ups-aplp4f-a20-08128 motherboard, and in its BIOS mode, there is a CRB option. Within CRB Advanced, there's a CSM Configuration option that includes a Boot Option Filter. This option can supposedly switch between legacy or UEFI mode, but it doesn't work. No matter how I adjust it, the boot list still doesn't show any system disks that boot in legacy mode. Given how long it's been, the new BIOS should support booting from legacy mode system disks by now, right? Although I have a UEFI mode image that I can use, it can't adjust partition sizes and occasionally freezes or crashes, which is really frustrating. So, I'm asking whether the BIOS now supports booting in legacy mode, or how to configure the current 6.4 BIOS version to support legacy mode booting?

Hi all,

I have a system that sometimes take a lot to boot up. It appears black screen and after a few minutes the system goes on. Other times boots instantly.

I'd like to know if changing the Watchdog setting in the BIOS from 300 to 15 seconds it may help to reduce the time that holds at startup. I've checked and it seems that the time with black screen reduces significantly, but I'm not 100% sure if this setting applies here.

Could it help?

Thanks in advance.

The only way we have found so far to obtain the serial number for these Upsquared computers is by looking on the box that the Upsquared system board is shipped in or by looking at the sticker on the system board.

We haven't been able to find the serial number within the BIOS or by running the command wmic bios get serialnumber

So we're hoping there is a way that we have manually enter the serial number for the Upsquared computer within the computer's BIOS or somewhere else so that in the future when the wmic bios get serialnumber command is run on the Upsquared computer this command will return the serial number of the Upsquared computer.

What process can be used to do this?

Update was carried out to get rid of random freezing of system, sometime UP BOARD runs for weeks in a row, sometimes it must be powercycled 2times a day. Even if computer runs only simple script in python or just runs wit webbrowser on top...

Will try to setup watchdog timer in BIOS, but this is somehow strange behaviour.

Another problem is that update runs automatically without confirmation, so that you have to wait to finish and disconnect flashdisk in the end, because anither "update" will take a part till the end of the world...

If you use the same windows 10 image on BIOS UPC1DM23 my CPU speed drops down to 48GHz. I've been troubleshooting this for the past couple days, going into registry and changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm to start at 4, but that only boosts my CPU to 1.44GHz. Also BIOS UPC1DM21 can't be found anywhere? Why is that. I can find older versions but not (21) Please advise. Thanks

Just got the first UP-Board 4GB/32GB for a new mass project.
(UP-CHT01-A22-0432-A11)
Serial C20702389
The board reports to be rev 2.1 on the BIOS screen and the UEFI Version UPC1DM21.
I'm not been able to find out the repository for this version on the website.
In case i want to do the downgrade to previous version I would need to recover the original 21 version.
Would be possible to "save" the current BIOS in to a file?
Is the version UPC1DM21 available somewhere for the download.

Thanks a lot.

The problem is the new boards came with UPC1DM15 which from what I can tell is only 64-bit. I tried to downgrade to the old 32-bit BIOS (UPC1BM0X) I was flashing my systems (which is working on my original systems).

Whenever I try to run the go_64_32.nsh I get the following error: "4 - Error: ROM file ROMID is not compatible with existing BIOS ROMID." Which is most likely since I am attempting to downgrade the BIOS.

Anyone have a 32-Bit UPC1DM15 BIOS?

I have been using the UPboard in my project for about a year now, and it never occured to me to see what would happen if i tried to run it without the RTC battery plugged in. it turns out, it significantly adds tot he boot times, i guess because the BIOS doesnt know what to do. i am booting Ubuntu 18.04 server, either from USB thumb drive or EMMC. with the battery plugged in, the UP logo comes on the screen once, the boot continues, and i am fully loaded in 25-30 seconds. However, without the battery plugged in, the UP log comes up multiple times (2-4), and on the last time it prints (very quickly, had to take video to capture it)

System boot order not found. Initializing defaults.
Creating boot entry "Boot0000" with label "ubuntu" for file "\EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi"

Reset system

then everything loads and goes as normal, but it adds 15 to 30 seconds to the whole boot process.

is there a way to avoid this multiple bios load when there is no RTC battery connected?

When I put a constant voltage of .7V into the ADC pin and cat the value at /sys/bus/iio/devices/iio:device0/in_voltage_raw', it is bouncing all over the place. I have tested this with two up boards and checked with a multimeter that the voltage is constant. I had no issue doing this on an upboard 2 years ago and am using a cloned image which leads me to believe that maybe it is a BIOS issue.

I have automated restore disks for my system and the only thing keeping it from it working without me needing keyboard or monitor is that whenever I unplug my flash drive or dvd drive and reboot, when they are plugged back in they are moved back to the bottom of the boot list, so I need to go into bios to move them back up. I've seen other computers where the bios has a place holder for DVD or USB flash drives so they can be placed higher in the boot order, even if they aren't currently plugged in.

I work for a company where we use a ton(hundreds...) of up boards, generally the 16GB storage, 2GB RAM variant. We use arch Linux and generally I just flash our new boards with a .img from another board. I do this because it's a lot faster than re-installing from scratch every time, in spite of having the whole process scripted.

The problem arose when trying to flash a board which is apparently from a newer batch than our previous orders, and has a nand chip which is 55MB smaller than expected.

After truncating the image and flashing it to the new board, the board doesn't boot, it just loops at the bios splash forever, not even allowing me to F7 into the menu. So far I've bricked two boards doing this so I'm trying to figure out what's wrong and what the solution is...

I don't know if this bug is related to me having truncated the image or if it's because my arch configuration is using the non-EFI Systemd-boot bootloader instead of GRUB-EFI, but I never had this issue with previous batches(UP-CHT01 R1.1) and needless to say, this is a big issue. Currently, my plan is to copy the bios from an older board and flash it onto one of the newer ones to see if this resolves the issue.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated...

we are planning to set up a class on linuxboot at the next OCP summit in March. The UP board is a near-perfect board, but we need the ability to reflash from an external programmer. There is a mention of this in the manual but I'm not sure which connector/pins are the right ones to use, and, further, what voltage is needed. Finally, are there schematics anywhere?

Thanks.

On the UpBoard with the default BIOS and the latest UPC1DM17 version, the onboard eMMC appears as hd0 in Grub. But if I boot the board with a USB drive connected, the USB device becomes hd0 and eMMC hd1 so grub cannot find the partition to boot.
Changing the boot order in the BIOS does not change anything on this behavior.

On other x86 platform, it seems that BIOS boot priority influences the grub disk number (see the post here: https://hub.mender.io/t/force-grub-to-select-emmc-when-flash-drive-plugged-in/725/12).

So could AAEON look into the BIOS settings if something could be changed to allow to keep eMMC as hd0 in Grub.

I am just updating the BIOS on the latest set of 8 UP Boards that I have got (4GB/32GB). First 7 boards updated fine. Process is straightforward plug USB hub with key board, mouse and BIOS stick in to a USB port, connect HDMI, connect power supply (UP supplied unit) wait for the splash screen and hit F7, etc. Bios update carried out after having loaded Ubuntu 18.04.
The last board, loaded Ubuntu had problems shutting the unit down - wouldn't power off. So shutdown on the power/reset button. Didn't dwell on that as previous boards wouldn't shutdown properly on reboot until the BIOS was updated (original BIOS dated 2016 on to r1.5 dated 11/18 as couldn't get r1.7 to load). On to updating the BIOS, when the splash screen came up it was missing the info in the top right corner and hitting F7 just brought up the pass word box but would do nothing. Mmm... tried plugging mouse, USB stick and keyboard directly into the UP Board same. Dropped the mouse, the same. Tried the key board in a different USB port it worked could access the BIOS, updated the BIOS. Curious I tried a different USB port, just keyboard - wouldn't work.
Something isn't quite right with this board as accessing BIOS is limited to connecting keyboard to certain USB ports and the board won't power down (I have reloaded Ubuntu in case it corrupted)
Is this a case of sending the board back?

My 13yo nephew is interested in a single board computer for playing around with and learning how they work. I am looking for one for him, but I do not know much about them. He wants to try a little programing, but wants to be able to play Runescape 3 on it too. That is the only game he likes. He wants to run windows 10 on it. I want to go as low as possible on price until I know it is something he will be interested in for the long term and then get him some better stuff later on, so I was wondering if anyone here had any good suggestions for a cheap starter board that meets these qualifications. Thanks.

Thank you.

Following the direction of some other users I tried updating the bios on my up-board to UPC1DM15. This solved my original problem. I was able to update windows and it boots just fine.

However, now I can't get into my BIOS settings which is a big problem for me. I need to be able to access the bios in order to make a backup image.

Hi Everyone,

I've upgraded the UP Board (4Gb Ram) BIOS using the firmware found here https://downloads.up-community.org/download/up-board-uefi-bios-upc1dm15/ but I've faced a lot of problems:

A ) The link for the download in the WIKI page is wrong
B ) I downloaded the correct zip file from the link mentioned above, and I followed the Wiki page procedure (https://wiki.up-community.org/Bios_Update ) but inside the zip file there is no "go_64.nsh" file, only a "GO.nsh".

I tought that the wiki was out of date so I ran the "GO.nsh" script and he flashed the BIOS correctly... Apparently. After the reboot now the board is stuck on the UP logo, and does not recognize anymore the eMMC (Ubuntu 16.04, before the update was working): the BIOS recognize an eMMC but he calls it "unknown".

Also is not possible anymore to boot from USB in UEFI. I plugged the same USB used for the upgrade of the BIOS and it won't recognize it anymore.

Now my UP is unusable. I really don't know what to do... Any clues?

Thanks to all the community, you are very helpful!

Hi All,

To resolve the 128 eMMC timeout issue, a setting in the BIOS needs to be adjusted

In the BIOS menu under Chipset, please adjust the eMMC Max Speed from HS400 to DDR50

The reason for this is because the 128GB eMMC is from SanDisk, and the flash controller that SanDisk uses require the Speed to be DDR50, the end result is a slower eMMC read/write performance comparing to other brands such as Hynix or Samsung.

We have highlighted this issue to SanDisk and there is no resolution, therefore, we have decided for MP version of UP2, we will use Samsung for the 128GB SKU. We have tested the Samsung 128GB on UP2 and it runs at HS400 (EMMC 5.1) for all different OS such as Windows/Linux/Android.

Hey Guys,

Per an earlier post, I managed to brick my UP Board by flashing the 2G/4G Bios update onto a 1GB Board. Now, I'm following the https://wiki.up-community.org/Bios_Update wiki to try to restore the image. I'm connecting to the W25Q64W SOIC using a pomona clip, and I'm running it through an Total Phase SPI Level Shifter. The level shifter provides 1.8V to the BIOS chip and shifts the levels from 1.8 to 3.3. On the 3.3 side I'm using a shikra.

I've triple checked all voltages and connections.

I'm running flashmon with the following command:

sudo flashrom -p ft2232_spi:type=232H

This returns back an unknown SPI device ID message. Through the use of ftdiflash, I've determined that the BIOS chip is returning all zeroes on all SPI transactions.

I was just wondering if anyone else has tried to do in situ bios rom programming on the up board before? The wiki claims you can do it, but I'm thinking that something on the board may be pulling the lines low. Other than that I'm not sure what else could be going wrong, maybe I could take a look at the SPI lines on a scope when I get access to one.

Thanks,
-Dylan

Hi, I was wondering if anything has changed in the upboards recently, potentially in BIOS default settings that might affect the HDMI port. I have 5inch touchscreen displays from adafruit that use just and hdmi port and an usb cable to hook up to the up board. This combo has always worked in the past on multiple systems. I just bought a new batch of upboards and none of them work with the monitors now. I can't see post or bios on the screen if I boot the upboard with the system booted up, but it does fully boot up. However, if I boot the system with a different monitor, and then after bootup switch to the adafruit monitor, it works fine as a monitor with touchscreen. Is there anything I can try changing in the bios to fix this behavior, or should I try downgrading the BIOS?

Hey Guys,

Trying to enable DCI(direct connect interface for intel debug) support in the UP Board bios, and I didn't see it anywhere in the options(usually it is in the advanced CPU settings). This is the 2016 bios. Unfortunately, had a snafu with the update to the 2018 bios(covered in another post), so I didn't get to see if it was an option in the latest and greatest either. I believe the up squared 2018 bios has the DCI option included. Does the 2018 bios for the regular up board have this option?

It also just occurred to me that you enter the bios by default as user, not admin without entering the admin password. Are the DCI settings hidden in the admin login? Even in the 2016 version?

Thanks

Hey Guys,

Was trying to upgrade the 2016 bios that comes default with the UP board(UP-CHT01-A10-0116) and followed the directions on the bios update wiki: https://wiki.up-community.org/Bios_Update.

I downloaded the 2018 bios zip ( UPC1DM11) on the following page:https://downloads.up-community.org/download/up-board-uefi-bios-upc1dm11/.

Per the directions on the wiki, you must run go_64.nsh for the up board at the prompt to begin the flashing. If you are using up squared, you run go.nsh. Unfortunately, the zip for the regular up board I downloaded had only go.nsh. So I assumed the wiki was out of date and that go.nsh took care of the differences between the up and up squared boards. But, after running go.nsh and the programming process completed, the board never restarted(looks like it is bricked). So I'm assuming the documentation is correct that you must run go_64.nsh, even though it is missing in the correct? zip I downloaded.

Is there another zip for the up board with go_64.nsh in it? I found the aforementioned zip via the link in the wiki. It appears UPC1DM11.zip is for the regular up board, and the link for up squared is UPA1AM33.zip. Or is the go.nsh correct for both boards and the wiki is wrong?

My motivation for flashing the board is that I'm trying to enable Intel debugging, and my understanding is that I need to enable DCI for that. DCI wasn't in the 2016 bios, and I saw that the option was included in the 2018 update for up squared, so I assumed it might have been applied to the bios update for the regular up board as well. No need to address that here though, I've created a seperate thread that covers my questions about enabling DCI.

Thanks

Also, I tried to disable IPU4 secure mode manually from the EFI shell using mm write to the IPU4 BAR0 Security Ctl register (offset 0x300) according to the driver flow. But it looks like this register is RO.

Is the unsecure mode is supported for the IPU4 at the current moment? Should I use any other option in BIOS to enable IPU4 Security Ctl register writes?

Hi there

I have multiple UP Boards. What I am trying to accomplish is to set all the UP Boards to the same BIOS version, configuration and boot order programatically. I have successfully been able to make all the UP Boards have the same BIOS verison and configuration, however, I cannot seem to be able to make the boot order consistent on all of them. The BIOS version I am able to successfully update to is the BIOS version which supports PXE boot UPC1BM0X_EFI. As far as configuration is concerned, I am referring to all options except boot order. For example, quiet boot enabled and PXE boot for IPV4 enabled.

The UP Boards I am using all use the AMI Aptio V (five) BIOS. I know that you can export an image of your current BIOS by using the afuefix64.efi tool provided by American Megatrends by running:

afuefix64.efi exported.bin /O

You can then flash the BIOS of another machine using the same tool with different arguments:

afuefix64.efi exported.bin /P /B /N /L

The options above evaluate to:
- P: Program main bios image
- B: Program Boot Block
- N: Program NVRAM
- L: Program all ROM Holes

I have been using the documentation and update utility available at:
AMI_Aptio_5.x_AFU_User_Guide_NDA.pdf and BIOS update util

After doing this, I can update the BIOS on another UP Board and ensure the relevant settings are configured correctly (i.e. PXE boot enabled). This all happens automatically when the UP Boards boot from my USB drive by running my custom startup.nsh script. The only problem I have is that the boot order is not changed. I need all the UP Boards to have the correctly boot order.

I have been reading the Aptio V Boot Option Infrastructure Guide which mentions the high-level steps for how the boot options are managed:

The high level steps of the boot option maintenance process are:
• Previous boot order list is read from non-volatile storage
• Currently available boot devices are collected
• Collected boot devices are filtered
• Collected boot devices are matched to options in previous boot order
• New boot options are created and missing ones are purged
• Boot options in list are processed based upon OEM needs
• Boot option list is stored back to non-volatile storage

This led me to believe the Program NVRAM argument (/N) would allow me to manipulate the boot order list as it is stored in non-volatile storage (NVRAM), however, updating the BIOS using this argument will happily update every other BIOS setting except the boot order. Can someone please provide me with some tips to manipulate the boot order programatically?

Cheers.

Edit: I do see that if I power off the device and disconnect the RTC battery, the boot options are set to some default order and all other BIOS settings are reset to default values which is quite interesting. I wonder, am I able to edit this factory default boot order to whatever I like and also force reload this factory default through EFI shell and/or by adding a different flag when performing a firmware update. Just food for thought..

Hi,

I've just started messing around with my old UP Boards which I got from the Kickstarter. They are the 4GB RAM/64GB eMMC model.

I upgraded the BIOS on all three. Two of them succeeded, and I was able to install Ubuntu fine.

One of them, no longer boots. There is no HDMI output, no BIOS, no response to keyboard key presses (Esc/F7/Del/etc)

Here is what I did:

Inserted USB with BIOS.

Went to shell.

Ran go_64.nsc.

Everything succeded fine and it dropped me back to the shell.

I ran reset in order to reboot the board.

At this point the screen went black, and I can no longer do anything else with it.

This is the BIOS I used: https://downloads.up-community.org/download/up-board-uefi-bios-upc1bm0x_efi/

I have (I hope) a simple question: What does it mean:
"Put files from BIOS package into UEFI bootable USB drive."

I am trying to install ubuntu 16.04 onto an Up-Board (part of the Realsense kit).
I have failed everything I've tried; 16.04 will not "stick" to the Up-Board, i.e. will not boot w/o USB stick inserted.
I figured I needed to upgrade the UEFI bios(?).

I have created a 16.04.3 image on a USB stick using Rufus.
If I unzip upc1bm0x_efi.zip then copy the content of the UPC1BM0X directory onto that USB stick, there will be conflicts, i.e. over writing of files.

I am presumably not understanding the instructions correctly.
I will be very grateful for help.

Thank you,
I use a PS/2 keyboard that I like because it has a "touch" particularly pleasant and it is connected to a USB adapter.

With Windows 10 the keyboard is well recognized, against during the boot of the Up Board it seems that the keyboard is not active, because I want to access the BIOS UEFI but I can not.
I tried F7, F2 and Del.
May be that I do not press the right key or at the right time?

But may be it is necessary to install a driver for the PS / 2 to be detected at boot, and if so which one.

Hi,
Not sure if that's the right place to ask about this, but I'm trying to get pxe boot to run a .sh script instead of restoring an image (.img/.iso)

I have installed clonezilla live on my pxe server, as was suggested to me by a colleague, which in theory should be able to execute .sh scripts - though I've followed the steps suggested by clonezilla to no avail.

I have modified the Default file (under /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg) to contain something like this:
initrd=/tftboot/initrd.img boot=live config noswap keyboard-layouts=en nolocales edd=on nomodeset ocs_live_run="sudo /tftpboot/create_target.sh" ocs_live_extra_param="" ocs_live_keymap="none" ocs_live_batch="yes" fetch=tftp://<<MY HOST DNS>>/images/clonezilla/live/filesystem.squashfs

A client that boots into the PXE boot option is shown the custom title i've created - but that's all. It doesn't attempt to execute the script.

If any of you good people can point me in the direction of solving this/finding a place appropriate this this kind of a question - it will be greatly appreciated!

I'm trying to add a second monitor to the UP board via a USB3 To VGA Adapter. The Adapter work fine with my laptop and allows me to add a monitor with up to 2048x1152 on my laptop, but when using the Up board in the same kind of configuration the upboard allows only a resolution of 800x600 on the same external monitor with same drivers and same monitor ... Looks like a limitation of the UP board BIOS ???

Please tell me how to use the UP board with the USB3 to VGA Adapter with the higher resolution (like 2048x1152) on the Upboard - any configuration on UP board required ?

I have tried to update my Up Board (32/4GB) BIOS without any success. The instructions don't make any sense to me.
Are there any instructions that do make sense?

I have downloaded "upc1bm0x_efi.zip" and unpacked it to "upc1bm0x_efi".

Now my question is:
Do all files inside this folder "upc1bm0x_efi" need to be copied onto the top level of the bootable USB drive that I have created with rufus 2.17 as a FreeDOS system? Or is it the folder itself or the content of the "UPC1BM0X" folder inside of the latter folder?

When I boot into this I get a list but the instructions do not tell me how to do anything that would come near updating the BIOS.

If anyone can give me an idea about which files need to be on the drive and which command to input for a 64bit BIOS update I'd be very greatful.

Thanks a lot!
