I am currently trying to set up my upboard to send and receive UART with a micro-controller and I am struggling to initialize the UART correctly.

I tried to run the commands given here: https://wiki.up-community.org/Pinout#GPIO_Example_.231
and received the error: stty: /dev/ttyS1: Input/output error

I then thought, "Oh well maybe mraa could figure this out," and the sample mraa uart code returned: ValueError: Error initializing UART

I am running ubuntu 16.04 and I've already tried reinstalling the upboard kernel following the instructions here: https://wiki.up-community.org/Ubuntu#Install_Ubuntu_for_UP.2C_UP2.2C_UP_Core_and_UP_Core_Plus_2

I've been searching the forums for solutions and have come up empty. Has anyone else had this experience? Could there be a step that I am missing? Thanks.

It started about 2 months ago and has progressively got worse. It started with Ubuntu 16, I upgraded to 17 and now 18.04 and none of the upgrades have changed anything. It is running kernel 4.15.0-52-generic. I couldn't even write this post using the UP because it would crash and reboot. Any ideas? Anyone else having similar problems?

Hello all

I just found a way to get the hdmi sound to work in the newest Ubuntu to work after a lot of research.
I ran across a website where someone has described the same problem, just wanted to share it with this forum, cause a lot of people might search here first, like me ^^

Commands used:
sudo usermod -aG audio <username>

test if sound is working:
aplay -Dplughw:0,2 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav

if this worked for you, make it permanent:
sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa (if this file is missing install pulseaudio)

add:
load-module module-alsa-sink device=plughw:0,2

and comment out the whole block where it says: "Automatically load driver modules dependin on the hardware available"
save , restart and now your hdmi sound should work

Hi Community,
I have designed an add on board that is working well on raspberry using QT/C++.
I2C example: RTC ds3231 on PINs (3 SDA, 5 SCK)
SPI example: MCP2515 on PINs (19 MOSI, 21 MISO, 23SCK, 24 CS0, 22 INT)
GPIO example: output LED on Pin11, input from Optocoppler on PIN 13

Due to performance reasons I want to use UPboard (4GB/64GB) with ubuntu server and using the hardware from userspace.

Bios is updated to (https://downloads.up-community.org/download/up-board-uefi-bios-upc1dm15/), Hardware configured (Pin functions, GPIO directions, i2c speed)

ubuntu server is installed according WIKI (https://wiki.up-community.org/Ubuntu#Installation)

i2c-tools and can-utils are installed
modprobe can, can-dev,can-raw,mcp251x done
GPIO working well from userspace

and now there are the problems:

Problem: i2cdetect -y -r 1 does not detect 0x68 as expected
no answer on all the other listed i2cdetect -l busses
and no activity can be measured on the pins using an oscilloscope

Problem: ifconfig shows no can0
I followed discussion (https://forum.up-community.org/discussion/96/canbus-hat-support)
but where to put that last file and how to compile it in userspace (linux headers missing) ?
as a try Kernel was compiled and installed but same results

I know that are embedded linux beginner questions but I do not know how to proceed
So any hint is very welcome, best regards!

Regardless of my schedule, I really would like to start hosting chess events for young kids like at the elementary age. I figure two or three times out of the week. My chess skills are intermediary, although I have no official rating, I can definitely say Ive played over a thousand matches online with nationals/internationals. Im not really looking for income, but at this moment in time I do not have enough money to spend on sets and accessories. Im not sure if I'll have enough money to spend on gas to go to and from that community (50 miles round trip). I really want to start tutoring elementary students, but my finances are not going to compliment my passion anytime soon. Should I charge to tutor and if so how much? Is there anywhere else I could seek resources?

Hello,

I am using the UP board 4GB ram/ 32GB storage, part # RE-UP-CHT01-A12-0432.

Previously I used it with the Realsense R200, as part of the realsense developer kit, found here: https://click.intel.com/intelr-realsensetm-robotic-development-kit-2461.html

I have acquired some of the new Realsense cameras, the D415, and am trying to integrate it with the UP board and my computer vision software. I can't use the cable supplied with the D415, because it is USB type C to type A, and the type A ports on the UP board are USB 2.0, not 3.0 as the D415 requires.

I have also tried this cable:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012V56992/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I can get the UP board to recognize the D415 using this cable, but it is listed as a USB 2.0 device, even though it is plugged into the USB 3.0 Micro B port.

If anyone could please assist me on what could be the issue I would really appreciate it.

Thank you!

1) Is sleep state (S3 or S0i3) working on the board with android?
3) I understand that for proper low power support, BIOS support is essential. Which states are supported by the current BIOS release ?
4) Is the BIOS source open, can it be re-built and flashed ?

I have a UP board (rapsberry pi form factor) with a 32Gb eMMC. I have been able to follow the instructions to create a bootable thumbdrive to install ubilinux onto it without any issues. I recently bought 4 new UP boards that had the 64GB eMMC. I attempted to use the same thumbdrive to install the OS on them, but now after I tell it to install I get some error messages saying it is unable to mount the eMMC. It says invalid argument and input/output error. It then comes up with a screen saying the CD-ROM installation media could'nt be mounted. I tried this on two of the new UP boards with the same results. I then retried it on the older UP board and it worked fine for it. Anyone have any ideas on why this would behave differently on the new board? I am using Ubilinux V3 from this location: https://downloads.up-community.org/download/test-download/

Ok, so I am working on a quick setup script for USB slave functionallity, Similar to that of the bash bunny's attackmode script. Now on the Bash Bunny, there is a proprietary kernel module that ties all of the legacy(hid, storage, serial, rndis, and ecm ethernet) devices together, where you can choose combinations, depending on the attack you plan on running, and it will generally set everything up on the host you plug it into. I am trying to do the same sort of thing using libcomposite and configfs So on to the problem.......

First, ConfigFS, has been a bit of a learning experience, but nothing to difficult for those who have plenty of linux knowledge.... That being said, no matter what I do, be it set os_descriptors, etc. I can not get RNDIS to work in a composite gadget with other gadgets. If I set it up with RNDIS alone, it works great. RNDIS/Serial, and RNDIS starts, but that isnt one of the combinations I am looking for. Now if I try RNDIS/Storage, or RNDIS/HID, or RNDIS/HID/Storage, the HID and Storage work fine, and the RNDIS, which is detected fails to start in Windows with code 10. This all works as expected on a linux host, but not on a Windows host running Windows 7(Using this as a testing platform)

Now doing a lot of googling, I think the problem comes down to this..... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2410682/function-of-usb-composite-device-fails-to-start-if-not-first-function

That being said, C/C++ are not languages that I am overly familliar with, so I am not sure how to apply the fixes they are describing. Do I need to patch libcomposite to force RNDIS to be the first, and second IAD in the composite device? or is there a way to so this in configfs? If there is it has to do with deviceclass, and device subclass, but I have been unable to find much documentation on that, other than the kernel documentation, which could have been better written. Really, the whole configFS gadget framework is under documented, but that is another story. I am not above patching the kernel, if that is what it comes to, I am already running an Up board platform patched/Kali Wifi Patched/Storage gadget patched(Allow images more than 2.5gb) gentoo kernel on top of a base gentoo system. So patching isnt the problem, what to patch is. If anyone else has run into similar issues, and can help spoonfeed me through the process of making composite gadgets with RNDIS work in Windows properly, I would appreciate it.

Hi,

I purchased the UP Board 4G/64G from Mouser including the power adapter. I have it running to a HDMI-DVI converter. The Android version available here as well as the Android-x86 6.0 RC1 version does not work well, the screen keeps blanking every time a new app or screen opens (basically any large screen refresh) the monitor says "Cable not Connected".

I installed Android 7.0RC1 from the Android-x86 project and that works a lot better but when I disconnected the power the system went into an endless reboot loop. It seems the system has corrupted the data on the chip, this used to happen with older Raspberry Pi's with underpowered power supplies and cheap SD cards, I've never seen it happen with a modern RPi, ODROID or other Android systems because they typically have higher quality eMMC in it and the power filtering chips are properly designed.

Does anyone else have these issues? What, if anything can be done about it or is this a known design flaw and should I just ship it back? The goal is to have these little systems as a Digital Signage system so I can't have them constantly corrupting on me. If it is a Linux kernel issue, what exactly are the configuration changes for the Kernel to make this type of system work correctly with it's eMMC, so I can compile my own Android kernel (I have a 48-core build station available, it takes me 15 minutes or so to compile). Does this system have any binaries or drivers that need to be plugged into the kernel and if so, where can I find them?

Hi,
I just downloaded the Android image from the web site and followed the instruction in the installation guide, but the installation stopped after step 6 as in the guide and prompted "Android-x86 installer is not available. Press RETURN to run live version". I pressed RETURN and then it just showed "ANDROID" at the bottom of the screen with the cursor kept flashing. Nothing happened from here. Reboot a few times , still the same. Screenshot as attached.

Is there any problem with the Android image or what did I just do wrong ?

Hi,

I've ran the board through it's paces. I got the 4G/64G board with a 4A power supply and the ABS case from Mouser.

I'm trying to run Android (x86-64), I tried the download offered here - that caused a blinking screen, every time the screen had a large refresh (swapped applications) the display went blank (the screen said no signal) then it returned which is pretty annoying. The screen is connected from a HDMI-DVI connector to a 1080p screen (I tried a higher res 1900x1200 screen before which made things look funny).

Then I tried stock Android x86 v6 RC3 from the android-x86 project - same problem.
Then I tried Android x86 v7 RC1 from the android-x86 project - much, much better performance all-around, the display issues went away however when I unplugged the board (hard power off) it wouldn't reboot any longer, it kept going to the Android logo and then reboots. I tried going into debug mode but that gives me a prompt saying I have to mount the EXT4 partition to replay it's journal.

Is this a common problem with these boards, I remember this being an issue with the RPi's too early on, any variation on the power supply would make the SD card corrupt, I was hoping with eMMC memory this wouldn't be a problem.

Does anyone have any pointers on compiling their own Android for these boards? What options/drivers in the Kernel should be enabled to make it work well/better?

I just bought an Up Board with 16GB eMMC. I did not pay attention but Windows 10 requires a minimum of 20GB to work well. Is there any elegant way to run a Win 10 on an upBoard with 16GB and make Win 10 OS "believe" that the board has more than 16 GB? for instance by using an external USB stick of 32GB and storing some part of the Win10 OS on the USB stick ? Did anyone try it, is it OK or too slow?
