Let’s have a look at the results:

The Raspberry Pi 5 is powered by a quad-core Cortex-A76 processor with up to 2.4GHz, compared to the four Cortex-A72 cores found in the Raspberry Pi 4 that only reached 1.8GHz. The integrated GPU is also much improved with now including a 800MHz VideoCore VII graphics processor over the VideoCore VI graphics with the Raspberry Pi 4.

With the Raspberry Pi 4 a moderate passive heatsink or even active cooling is recommended. But with Raspberry Pi 5 adequate cooling is crucial with the higher-clocked and faster Cortex-A76 cores. For this reason, in this comparison, we will show the performance of Raspberry Pi 5 without cooling and with the optional active cooler provided by the RPi Foundation.

The UP 7000 is a credit card-sized developer board that is powered by the latest Intel® Processor N-series platform (formerly Alder Lake-N) 1. The performance is up to 1.4x improved compared to previous Intel SoC generation in single thread.

The built-in Intel® UHD Graphics Gen12, a new generation of GPU based on Xe architecture with up to 24 Execution Units, is also a powerful AI engine and available for AI inference (with FP16 and INT8 quantization support).

UP 7000 series has a standard industrial PC operating temperature range of 0~60 C, making it flexible for any applications and it comes with a proper passive heatsink to handle properly the cooling of such powerful board. It is also designed with industrial standard 12V DC power input.

With Secure Boot support and the TPM 2.0 chip on board, UP 7000 enables better security options for any project, thanks also to the support of multiple operating systems such as Microsoft Windows 10/11 and multiple Linux Distributions like Debian and Ubuntu.

Both Single Board Computers offer a flexible 40-pin HAT GPIO can be configured also as PWM, UART, I2C, I2S, SPI.

Test Setup:

<a All Systems are based on the same configuration except the main SoC, which are:

UP Xtreme i11 Celeron

UP Xtreme i11 Core-i3

UP Xtreme i11 Core-i5

UP Xtreme i11 Core-i7

The TDP setting is set to the standard 28W (for Core-i3, Core-i5 and Core-i7) except for Celeron(15W) as Celeron SKU doesn’t have option to configure up to 28W for TDP setting.

The common hardware and software configuration is the following:

RAM: 16GB DDR4

Storage: 128GB SSD

Operating System: Ubuntu 20.04 64bit

The UP Xtreme i11 Core-i7 is obviously the fastest, showing major performance gains, together with Core-i5, on applications optimised for multi-threaded processing and specifically:

5 times faster than Celeron on parallel compression/decompression, encoding/decoding and openSSL

2 to 3 times faster in most other applications

Up to 2 times faster on integrated GPU performance, where the difference between Core-i7 down to the Celeron is in the number Execution Units and Frequency (not Memory or architecture).

A particular mention goes to the AI Benchmarks, where the combined results of CPU+GPU and latency show an average of 2 times the performance for Core-i7 than the baseline (Celeron). While if considering only the CPU results, in particular the FPS, the performance for the Core-i7 is 5 times the Celeron.

I would like to know if there are any issues the compatibility, recommendation and existing project using the same platform. Is there any benchmark on the size of storage required in relation to the size of object being scanned?

Are you evaluating the platforms for your next Industrial IoT Project?
We have released a simplified tutorial to evaluate OPC UA (OPC Unified Architecture) based on the open-source implementation open62541 to take advantage of the TSN functionality available on our UP series with Intel i210 network interfaces:

- UP Core Plus with NetPlus
- UP Xtreme

It can be used as a starting point to learn/evaluate OPC UA including TSN technology and it is based on the tutorial created by Kalycito, with additionally pre-patched and configured kernel source and configuration files for our platforms.

Want to develop your own computer vision application?

No problem at all! We have released an Open Source sample application to get you started on our Github repository. This application is designed to detect the humans present at the entrance and exit of a building or area. If the people enter the marked area, it raises the alert (+1 for entry, -1 for exit) and sends through MQTT.
It is intended to demonstrate how to use computer vision to monitor the number of people inside a building or area.

We encourage you to try this application, as this sample application can help developers to create AI based solutions for monitoring the number of people in a building or area. Plus, it's a practical way to keep social distancing measurement for COVID-19.

Working on a Windows project and looking for a driver to control GPIO pins on UP Squared?
For Windows users who would like to control GPIO on UP Squared, here is how:
You would need either Windows 10 (plus drivers) or Windows IoT Core image installed and then add our Windows SDK:
https://downloads.up-community.org/download/up-sdk-for-windows-10-and-windows-iot/
We would also like to share with you that we are also working on a new version of SDK, which includes SPI & UART support and it is scheduled to release in Q3.
