Hello UP-community,

I may have accidentally put 24V on the 5V of my USB 2.0 connector on the UpCore I use.
As a result two components are damaged. One 5pin component, which seems to be a voltage regulator, lost a leg. And one resistor became so hot, it just fell off. I have some people who are experienced in SMD soldering and repairs, so as long as I find replacements for the broken components I should be able to fix this.

Does anybody know where to get schematics for the UpCore? Or maybe somebody has a working one and could take a close up picture of that part for me? Maybe that helps to identify the broken components.

UP Board was located in inside of instrument. Thus we can’t push power button.
So, we change BIOS setting to boot automatically when 5V power applied.
But randomly UP board didn’t boot even if power was applied.
So, we have to disassemble an instrument and push power button for booting.

Trouble :
1)FAN & LED is normally workable but booting doesn’t proceed (NO BIOS logo) when input power.
2)If we push power button when 1), booting proceed normally.
3)After 2), there was no booting error anymore.

Test Condition:
1)BIOS Version : UPC1BMOT / UPC1BMOS / UPC1DM17
2)BIOS setting : Default (State After G3 [S0 State])
3)Test method : 5V Power ON/OFF in a cycle and then monitor booting process (25sec On / 2sec Off)

This is critical problem for the instrument manufacturer....

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to deploy the UP-Board as the embedded-PC inside the product I am currently developing.
So far it has proven to be much more suited for the task, than any other SBC in this price segment: It's so nice to get any 64bit Linux distro running with the same ease as on a regular desktop PC, without any of the hassle I've been through while testing other, ARM based alternatives!

But in order to obtain product safety certification (TÜV) for my final product, I am required to document how the schematic for the RTC battery looks like.
It turns out that the TÜV is quite insisting on verifying any circuit connected to any battery within the product. As far as I understand it, they need to confirm the presence of a certain resistor in series with the battery ("Line input resistor").

Does anyone know where I can get this kind of information or assistance in getting it?

Cheers,
Axel

BTW: My application really requires the RTC feature, otherwise I'd just detach the Battery. The integrated RTC module is actually one of the many reasons why I prefer the UP-Board over other alternatives.

Hi,

Not sure if this is the correct sub forum to post in as I don't see anything for the Gateway.

I received my Gateway today via DHL. Plugged in a simple linux OS via USB stick that many others use without issue and I am getting the attached constant USB error. I feel like there might be a hardware issue with one of the USB ports or hub????

The strange thing is that the error is aways on usb port 1-7.3. And it occurs even with NO USB devices plugged into the Gateway at all (after booting from the ram based linux on USB stick and removing). Also, I tried plugging a keyboard into all 4 USB 2.0 ports and it works on ALL of them. I.e. it doesn't seem like it's related to one of the USB 2.0 ports. I don’t have a USB 3.0 OTG cable/device to test that port.

Very confusing - again, the attached error keeps spinning even with no usb devices plugged in. It's like there is an electrical issue somewhere. Should I return this device?

Cheers

Hi,
my Up boards are being powered from external HAT via 5V pins on 40 pin connector. Due to incorrectly made custom wire on one of the boards, the voltage was applied incorrectly (reversed polarity).
It seems to have killed something on the board, and now the 5V supplied is not carried from 40-pin connector to the Up board main power bus. The other functionality that I use (communication interfaces on the 40pin) seem to work fine, and Up board itself is working correctly when powered from barrel jack.

My question is, how can I safely rewire the Up board to pass power from 5V pins on 40pin connector to the main board? Simplest solution seems to be to connect 5V barrel jack pin directly to 5V on 40pin. Is it safe tho, or some weird voltage loops may happen?

Hi,
as far as I understood the CN31 connector can be used for DSI output, as well as eDP output, but the connector specifications found on the wiki[1] only show the DSI pinout, not the eDP. So, which eDP version does the UP-Board utilise? Is the pinout compatible to the eDP v1.1a released by VESA in 2007? (The screen I want to connect has 1.1a) Or does the UP-Board have a custom pinout (Why would it though?).
Also, what is the mating connector for the board? The specs say it's a Hirose FH35C-41S-0.3SHW(50) connector, but I can't find the modell number for the mating connector (the "find mating connector" function on the Hirose site doesn't work for me). And where can I buy an eDP cable for connecting the UP-Board with the screen - up until now, I could only find some shady chinese websites with questionable respectability

I was sent here from RMA support (https://up-shop.org/). Quite unusually, but I will post my issue as indicated by them.

Some time ago to our office arrived new order with UpBoards. I've run few tests (simple UART example PIN 8,10) using desktop version of Ubuntu 18.04 with dedicated kernel following this manual: https://wiki.up-community.org/Ubuntu_18.04

It turned out that I'm unable to control GPIOs.

I can run another type of tests if someone can suggest something, but we have 10 others UpBoards in our office right now and all of them working perfectly fine (with the same test). UpBoard is show info in log "up-pinctrl up-pinctrl: CPLD initialisation failed" every time I turn it ON.

We're buying approximately 80-100 UpBoards per year, so we have some experience with them, and we are able to compare one device to another, and this one is not working fine for sure.

Someone has any idea what is wrong?

Best regards,
Hubert

I'm using an Up Board Rev A 1.1 with a custom HAT PCB that has two AVRs onboard with the micros having control of powering up the UP Board. The UP 40-pin header is connected to each AVR over UART (TX and RX) with a GPIO for each to apply a reset (instead of UART_DTR), in order to be able to update firmware to both micros. However, the current revision doesn't account for the UP Board GPIO startup state and so when the UP boots, it pulls the reset line on both micros low and causes a reset that results in power never being supplied to the UP board for more than a few seconds.

A few solutions have been thrown around, but they all have some issues since the UP Board GPIOs seem to have varied startup characters from pin to pin. I've seen some stay low at boot-up, some start with a ~15s high pulse, and some with a ~45s high pulse. Is there any concrete documentation on the startup characteristics of the entire set of GPIO? The Pinout wiki page has some data, but nothing more in depth than mentioning the startup high pulse for an old revision of the UP Board.

Hey Everyone,

I'm currently working on a project where we are using an UP Board for mobile data collection. Essentially, the subject wears the UP Board on their belt or in a bag while going through their day. To make this process mobile, we have started using the S.USV UPs board supplied by Olmatic seen here:

https://up-shop.org/up-peripherals/256-mobile-ups-wireless-power-supply-for-up-boards.html

Unfortunately neither the stock 300mAh nor the 3000mAh battery run the UP Board long enough for us to complete a data collection session (10-12 hours).

My question: One obvious solution is to use a higher capacity battery, although with the stock voltage being 3.7V these batteries seem to be very hard to find. Is it acceptable to use a higher voltage battery along the original battery connection or the other, external power connection? General insight from others trying to use the UP Board in a mobile capacity would also be great. Thanks.

Hello,
I did not found if UpBoard i2c pins (3 &5 ) are able to drive 5V i2c external device directly.
It works well with 3V device ( i use 24c32 EEPROM for now ).
However, as soon as I connect level shifter and 5V devices then ( via levels shifter in the middle , one like this : https://wiki.analog.com/university/courses/alm1k/alm-lab-voltage-level-shifter ) it stop the work at all ( also 3V side 24c32 stop work too ). As soon as I remove level shifter, 3V site start to work without any issue again.
So , is 3V<>5V level shifter necessary to use, or can I drive/connect 5V devices on UPBoard i2c pins directly ?
By the other words, how to connect 5V IIC devices to UPBoard I2C ?

Hello,

I use a lot of Single Board Computers and the point is that when I use internal pull-up/down resistors, I always have spurious floating input with spurious push button. (true on Raspberry Pi and ODROID)
Now, on SBC, I always use external level resitors.

On the UpBoard, on the pinout wiki page, we can see :

The SoC GPIO pins include configurable internal pull-up resistors, but these are not really effective when the level translators are configured in input mode. If pull-up or pull-down resistors are needed for stabilizing floating input signals on a header pin, the user would need to include these in the external circuit connected to the UP board.

I is the first time I see this "not effective pull-up resistor" and I am curious to understand why is it not effective.

With this build in mind I would also like to connect my razer tartarus, razer naga, and a mini keyboard. Also I was hoping to connect some sort of larger storage for games.

Would this be possible?

It takes almost 35 seconds to be displayed UP logo after turning on the power

After displaying UP logo, up board became freezing status.

And also, we have to wait a few minutes to enter BIOS setting mode, after pushing ESC button.

Hi,

It appears I have no or limited power at the USB ports of one of my my four UP Gateways ( ATOM x5-Z8350.w/4G memory,32G eMMC board). I requested an RMA but was advised to check here first. It would be great if there was a solution to avoid the hassle of returning the unit.

The gateways are endpoints for home audio distribution. Three work perfectly - the fourth appears to have no (or low) voltage at it's USB ports. I found a post here in the hardware spec category from Dec. 2018 which appeared to have the same no USB power problem but the thread offered so solutions. I've ordered a USB port tester from Amazon to help verify the problem with specific numbers. What I've done so far...

Testing methodology:

Exact same 5V power supply (only one I've used since the order arrived),

Exact same outboard bus-powered DAC (iFi micro iDSD-BL - owners manual), and

Exact same USB cable with each gateway.

Results:

On all three working gateways:

DAC on / gateway power supply OFF = blinking green light on DAC which means "Awaiting USB connection"

DAC on / gateway power supply ON = solid steady light on DAC (signal has been established).

On the problem gateway:

DAC on / gateway power supply OFF = blinking green light

DAC on / gateway power supply ON = blinking green light
The USB connection is never acknowledged by the DAC. I have an older version of the same DAC (iFi micro iDSD (not BL)) and it's behavior is identical.

Similarly, I also tested 6 known working thumb drives. Their tiny indicator lights all illuminate properly with the three functioning gateways. One the problem one, none of the thumb lights ever goes on.

Thanks in advance for any insight.
Dave

Hello everyone,,
My 13yo nephew is interested in a single board computer for playing around with and learning how they work. I am looking for one for him, but I do not know much about them. He wants to try a little programing, but wants to be able to play Runescape 3 on it too. That is the only game he likes. He wants to run windows 10 on it. I want to go as low as possible on price until I know it is something he will be interested in for the long term and then get him some better stuff later on, so I was wondering if anyone here had any good suggestions for a cheap starter board that meets these qualifications. Thanks.

Hello,

I am using an UP board with an output device connected to the SPI pins (SPI_CLK and SPI_MOSI).
I am using SPI with DMA transfers (via the pxa2xx* diver)

I have found that I am limited to ~830KBytes/Sec - regardless of SPI clock rate.
This is even using just a single DMA transfer buffer.

I read that up to 25MHz clock was supported =>~3MB/s , so I suspected some issue in the driver.
I attached a Logic Analyser to check it and found that the clock rate *is* honored.
(e.g. If I select 12.5MHz then I *do* see CLK running 12.5MHz)

However, this is not sustained within a single DMA transfer.
i.e. There is reduced utilization - that is, periods where CLK just stops!
At 4MHz I see nearly 100% utilization, reducing at 8MHz and even further at 12.5MHz.

This accounts for the throughput limitation.
I did some searching and found a Z8000 series datasheet that says the SPI is running over the SSP
and the SSP itself is limited to 6.5Mbps (832KB/s).

Are my findings correct?
Is there any way to lift this limit (I'm trying to achieve 8Mbps minimum)?
Or, would I need to forgo the hardware SPI and bit bash on some other GPIO? (Is that even possible?)

I welcome any insight in this area.

Regards.

I've seen arguments for IoT use cases that Win10 IoT has networking and enterprise infrastructure benefits over Linuix / Android, but on this platform it's my opinion that you'd be crazy not to use a more complete OS that can run anything you want and customize it to your use, unless I'm missing something - does IoT use less power for example (with equivalent base OS), is there better hardware support in IoT? Am I missing something?

Recently I ordered an Intel R200 Robotics development kit from Mouser, which came with a new UP board. I should have checked if it also came with a wifi adapter (it did not...).

I am soon going to mount this in a Turtlebot3 Waffle PI (to replace the PI and camera).

Wondering which Wifi Adapter to use. I am probably asking this after all of the horses left with the open barn door as I ordered a couple of adapters from Amazon, which should ship tonight, but...

I decided to not order the same one as the UP ships and I have on my other UP board as would prefer to not purchase another one that you have to replace the drivers to make work OK...

Likewise I have some older edimax dongles which I have used in Odroids and earlier RPI boards.

What I have ordered include:
Panda Mini Wifi 150Mbps Wireless N USB Adapter

I believe I saw reference to both of these either by name like Panda or by chip type RT5572.

Any better suggestion? If not I will probably start by trying the Sparklan adapter as it is higher speed...

Thanks

Hi,

I'm powering my UP board through the GPIO using an OpenCR board as a PSU. It has a 5V@4A regulator fed from a LiPo or an AC adapter.
UP board specs says it should run fine even with 5VDC@3A, which it actually does BUT I encounter connection stability issues with both the WiFi adapters I could try.
Using a powered hub: I get muuuuch less connection drops.

I investigated on voltages using a simple voltmeter with two probes and an USB voltmeter widget. Here are the results:

5.02V out of OpenCR (up board running)

5.00V on UP board GPIO powered between pin 4(5V) and 6(GND) (-> 0.02V loss along the tiny cable between the two boards -> very acceptable)

5.00V also measured between pin 2 and 6 of OpenCR

4.93V on each of the UP board USB ports (only the voltmeter widget is connected to the USB ports)

I did not check the USB 3.0 OTG connector

Are these results within the acceptable range regarding both the USB 2.0 specifications and the actual performance that can be expected from the UP board ?
